How hard is it to get a merchant account? Harder than a retail signup and easier than the stories going round hemp forums. The work is mostly clerical, not persuasive, and the parts that actually sink applications in this industry are almost all inside your control. Here they are, hardest first.

Hardest: website copy you have stopped seeing

This is where clean files die. An underwriter reads your live site and looks for claims that a product treats, cures, prevents or diagnoses a condition, and this category attracts regulatory attention precisely because those claims are common in it.

The difficulty is not fixing the copy. It is finding it. It hides in old blog posts, imported product reviews, alt text, meta descriptions, FAQ pages written two years ago, and social profiles that still link to your store. Search your own site for symptom and condition words before you apply and read what comes back with an underwriter’s eyes rather than a marketer’s.

Hard: describing your catalogue with total precision

Hemp topicals, ingestibles, tinctures, hemp flower, delta-8 and other cannabinoids, kratom and vape hardware are separate propositions to a bank, not one industry. A file that says “CBD products” and turns out to include flower gets reopened, and reopened files take longer than accurate ones did.

Get precise before anyone asks. That includes what you plan to add next quarter, because a catalogue that drifts from what was underwritten is the single most common reason an established account gets reviewed. Our page on what makes CBD high risk explains why the classification question carries so much weight here.

Hard: history you would rather not mention

If a platform closed you, say so, and say why if you know. A prior closure is a fact an underwriter can work with. A concealed one becomes a credibility problem, and credibility is the one thing you cannot repair halfway through an application.

The same goes for chargeback history and for any account currently running. Volunteer it. Files that read as candid get the benefit of the doubt on the ambiguous parts, and every file has ambiguous parts.

Moderate: the paperwork itself

Formation documents, EIN, owner identification, any licence your state requires, certificates of analysis showing compliance with the 0.3% delta-9 THC limit on a dry weight basis under the 2018 Farm Bill, supplier details, and three months of bank statements.

Tedious rather than difficult. It only becomes difficult when it is assembled one email at a time over three weeks, which is what most owners do. Our walkthrough of the account itself lists what underwriting asks for so you can gather it in one sitting.

Not hard at all: how hard is it to get a merchant account if you apply in the right place

Applying to a bank that already underwrites hemp-derived products is a straightforward process. Applying to one that does not is impossible in a way no amount of preparation fixes, and it costs you a week and a decline on your record.

So ask the question in writing before you apply: does the acquiring bank behind this account underwrite my category at my volume? We will not tell you that any named platform will board your business, because that decision belongs to their underwriting team rather than to us. What we can tell you is how to read what each one publishes, which is the point of processor policies for hemp and CBD, and what a dedicated route involves, which is our CBD merchant account page.

The part nobody can make easier

Approval belongs to the acquiring bank. Not to us, not to any provider, not to anyone with a form on a website. A promise of guaranteed or instant approval is a claim about a decision the person making it does not control, and in this industry it is a reliable sign to slow down.

There is also a line that no preparation crosses. Cannabis remains federally scheduled, and no hemp account extends to plant-touching retail sales. If that is your business, the options are different ones, set out in dispensary payments.

Frequently asked questions

Does being a new business make it much harder? It makes the file thinner, which usually shows up as a reserve rather than a decline. Bring what history you do have, including personal banking and any pre-orders or wholesale relationships, and expect the terms to improve as the account builds a record.

Will bad personal credit stop me? It is one factor among several rather than a gate. Ask any provider what they check and how much weight it carries, and disclose anything they will find, because they will find it.

How much does the volume matter? Enough that stating it accurately is worth more than stating it impressively. Underwriters compare declared volume against actual deposits, and a wide gap either way triggers reviews on accounts that were running perfectly well.

Is it harder for online-only sellers? Card-not-present carries more dispute risk, so expect more attention to your checkout, your refund policy and your fulfilment. The gateway side of that is covered on our CBD payment gateway page.

What is the fastest thing I can do today? Read your own site as if you were underwriting it, and fix what you find. It costs nothing, it takes an afternoon, and it removes the most common reason applications stall. If you want a second pair of eyes, tell us what you sell.
